Plug-in solar in the UK: the 2026 rules and the kits that comply

Since 27 August 2026 you can buy a solar panel, plug it into a normal socket and start cutting your electricity bill, with no electrician needed for a compliant kit. Here's what the new rules say and which kits meet them.

The rules in plain English

No batteries, for now. The new rules don't cover batteries, and a compliant plug-in solar kit must not be connected to battery storage. The government only began a safety study on plug-in batteries in August 2026, so we've left battery bundles out of this guide.

How much will it save?

It depends on where the panel faces, how much sun it gets and when you use electricity. Plug-in solar works best when you use power during the day, because anything you don't use goes back to the grid. Use the maker's estimate as a guide, not a promise.

Before you buy: check the product says it meets the UK government's Interim Product Specification for plug-in solar (version 2.0). If it doesn't say, ask the seller. Rules are new, so they may change.

How we chose

We picked kits sold by UK retailers we could check, using prices reported in September 2026, then compared panel size, seller and price. We left out kits bundled with batteries, because batteries aren't covered by the current rules.

Common questions

Is plug-in solar legal in the UK?

Yes, since 27 August 2026, for compliant kits up to 800W that are registered with your network operator.

Do I need an electrician?

Not normally, for a compliant kit plugged into a suitable socket. If your wiring is old or you're unsure, get it checked.

Can I add a battery?

Not under the current rules. Plug-in batteries aren't covered, and compliant kits must not connect to battery storage.

Do I need planning permission?

Usually not for a small kit on a balcony, wall or garden, but listed buildings, conservation areas and flats with lease rules may differ. Check first.

Will I get paid for what I don't use?

Only with an export tariff, and your supplier may need a smart meter. Otherwise unused power goes to the grid unpaid.
