USB-C
A small rounded oval, the same at both ends. The plug fits either way up. Used by iPhone 15 and later, most Android phones, newer iPads and laptops.
Lightning
A slim slot on iPhones up to the iPhone 14 and older iPads. The plug is a flat metal tab with contacts on both sides, and fits either way up.
Micro-USB
Smaller and flat, with sloping sides so it's wider along one edge. It only fits one way up. Used by older Android phones and lots of gadgets.

Common questions
Which iPhones use USB-C?
Every iPhone from the iPhone 15 on uses USB-C, including the iPhone 16e and iPhone Air. The iPhone 5 up to the iPhone 14, and the iPhone SE models, use Lightning.
Can I use a more powerful charger than my phone needs?
Yes. With USB-C Power Delivery the phone and charger agree on the power, so the phone only takes what it can handle. A bigger charger can also charge a tablet or laptop.
Does any USB-C cable work with any USB-C phone?
Yes, for charging. Faster charging over about 60W needs a cable rated for 100W or 240W, but phones don't need that much.
